  • JohnTripp More

In May of 1967, I graduated from Stanford High School in Stanford, MT which was a class of 29 students. I attend Eastern Montana College, which is now Montana State University Billings, and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. I moved to Bozeman, MT and earned a Master of Science degree in Microbiology/Environmental Science from the Montana State University in 1973. I attended the Boyne School of Dental Science at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska and completed my dental degree in May 1977. In March of 1973, I married Judy Bertelson. We have two children; Ryan and Allison. Ryan is nearly 36, married and has one son; Connor William, age one and half. Allison is nearly 34, has identical twin girls, Dessa and Braya, age one and half. She will marry this September. We lost Judy in December of 2007. I married Sharon E. Flom in September of 2009 and we are forming a new life together. Sharon is a CPA and runs her own accounting firm. The second summer after starting the practice, I attended my first real practice management seminar with Jim and Naomi Rhodie out of Arizona; Jim had been a corporate executive and Naomi a dental hygienist. They were the first people to let me know that, What goes on in your practice is what you want to have happen. It is no one else's responsibility or concern. That may seem to be very basic and rudimentary, but until then I was just doing some dentistry and going along for the ride. They helped me form some basic ideas on what kind of practice I wanted to have and how to get there. I felt that learning how to run the business end of a dental practice was most lacking in my formal education and was glad for the guidance. Over the course of 35 years of general dentistry practice, I have attended thousands of hours of continuing education (C. E.) courses. I often refer to myself as a C.E. junkie. I focused on learning more clinical procedures and management, time and motion, planning, as well as personnel management, business and personal goal setting, and financial planning for the practice and myself. In the early 80's there was a general economic down turn in our local economy; high inflation and a general pull back by my patients for doing comprehensive dentistry. I joined a management company called Quest. The two main drivers of this company were Darryl Caine CPA and Bill Blatchford DMD. It was a get them in, get it done, and get them out high production numbers are everything sort of management style. We stayed with them for a couple of years. Quest finally fell apart and Bill Blatchford started his own practice management company. We worked with him a couple of years.

In 2002, we moved the office to a larger facility nearly doubling the treatment area and much more support space and storage area. The practice was not picking up quickly enough for me, so I went to a DOCS sedation course to add another dimension to the practice. There, I happened to meet Jim DuMolin of DuMolin & DuMolin Practice Management. The thing that I liked about DuMolin & DuMolin was that they were a more patient based management company with lots of emphasis on leadership skills and planning. They lead me to Advanced Hygiene with Valarie Williams, RDH and Linda O'Grady who helped me and my practice redefine our hygiene department. We stayed with DuMolin and DuMolin until they shut down after about three years. From that grouping of dentists and like-minded people came Sunrise Dental Solutions with Tony Feck DDS and Linda O'Grady at the helm. Tony and Linda provided me with excellent advice. Further, they coached and prompted me to expand the practice, provide quality care for my patients, and give my team members a sense of ownership and fulfillment in the practice that they helped build. In 2007, we became associated with a financial consulting group called Caine Watters & Associates out of Dallas, TX. Darryl Caine, CPA was back in my life once again. Cain Watters is an accounting firm that is tailor-made for Dentists. They provided counseling for the finances of the practice (more than just P and L's), personal financial planning (retirement), and if you wanted, they also provide wealth management investment services. They helped me lay the foundation for the eventual sale of the practice. The practice started out as a two- operatory, one doctor and 2 team member practice in 1977. By 2009, it had grown to a six-operatory, one doctor and 11 team member practice. In 2011, we grossed in excess of $2 million with an overhead of less than 40% and collection rate of 98%. I sold the practice in October of 2012 and am working part time for the new owner. It is an adjustment being an employee instead of the boss after all these years, but its working. My experience in the management of a general dental practice has come from many different sources and philosophies. I have had to sort out to which ones were the best ones to make the practice what I wanted it to be. Mistakes were made along the way, but we always tried to learn from them and not make the same ones twice. I wish that Sunrise Dental Solutions had been there in the early years of my practice. What a difference that guidance would have made.
